Experts reassured that India need not be concerned about Chinas current Covid-19 infection outbreak, which might infect 65 million cases per week by the end of June.

According to information presented at a biotech conference in Guangzhou by respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan, by the end of May, China may face about 40 million infections per week.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Department of Biotechnology, and the Health Ministry has joined forces to form the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). Combining Omicrons BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 subvariants, XBB is the most evasive sublineage of the Omicron variant.

In India, the XBB subvariant led to a mild increase in Covid-19 instances towards the end of the previous year. Still, neither hospital admissions nor fatalities rose due to this spike.

Natural immunity against the Omicron and the extensive vaccination coverage implemented by the Indian government in a short time period prevented the severity of the disease in most Covid positive cases.

Repeated infections can negatively impact the incidence and severity of subsequent infections. Hence, high-vulnerable individuals have been recommended to continue to adhere to Covid behavior and receive vaccinations as preventive doses.
